Dr. Derek Ohlstein

Dr. Ohlstein recently completed his Ophthalmology Residency training at Shands Medical Center at the University of Florida. This was preceded by an Internship in Internal Medicine at the University of Florida. During this time, at UF he was given an award for outstanding performance. While in residency, he received a broad training in Comprehensive Ophthalmology, with particular emphasis on small incision/sutureless phacoemulsification cataract surgery. Additional areas of interest and expertise include medical retina and oculoplastics.rnrnHis undergraduate training was at Tulane University in New Orleans, with Bachelors and Masters degrees in Cell and Molecular Biology. He was a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars.rnrnHe has published many articles in peer-reviewed literature, on both esoteric scientific topics, as well as clinically applicable topics in ophthalmology. rnrnIn addition to his clinical and research achievements, he has been active in a variety of community and public service areas including the rebuilding of medical infrastructure in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina with participation in the founding of the Fleur De Vie free clinic. He has also donated time to the Salvation Army, Food drives, fundraisers for public schools, and community clean up programs. rnrnHe is a member of several professional societies including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgery, the American College of Physicians, the AMA, FMA and National Honor Society, to name just a few. rnrnInterests outside of medicine are broad including music, photography (with a brief career with LIFE magazine and a nationally recognized Award of Merit), sports, and website and android development.rnrnWe are looking forward to a rewardin
