David M. Shepherd, M.D. was certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology for life in 1978 however he voluntarily underwent the arduous process to become re-certified in 2012. Dr. Shepherd is currently the only comprehensive ophthalmologist in the State of Michigan who voluntarily re-certified. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan Medical School, completed advanced training in ophthalmology at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the American Medical Association, Michigan State Medical Society, and the Michigan Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons. He has been practicing ophthalmology since 1978.rnrnDuring his career Dr. Shepherd has helped train many ophthalmologists now in practice in Michigan and though out the United States. Dr. Shepherd is respected for his surgical skills by his patients and peers. He is known for performing no needle no stitch, micro-incision (1/10 inch) cataract surgery, allowing patients to return to normal activities quickly after surgery.rnrnHe focuses his practice on the treatment of eye diseases related to diabetes, cataracts, and glaucoma. He believes that frequent eye exams, especially for diabetics, are essential in the prevention of blindness. Dr. Shepherd is an expert in laser treatment. He has been performing laser treatments since 1974 and conveniently has two in-office lasers used to treat various eye conditions. In addition Dr. Shepherd uses advanced high tech instruments to aid in diagnosing serious eye conditions early so appropriate treatment can be initiated. rnrnAbove all, Dr. Shepherd cares about his patients and their well being.
